Movie review, The Poughkeepsie Tapes

 HI Everyone!

Today's movie review is The Poughkeepsie Tapes, directed by John Erick Dowdle, the film was originally released in 2008, but due to unknown reasons it was pulled from schedule. Until 2017 the film was released on Blu Ray. The film has been reviewed as, "disturbing". And yes the film is quite disturbing, but there are not many graphic scenes its for the most part psychological which is what makes it disturbing. (I recommend watching it with someone else, not alone, never experienced fear that I am afraid for my life.)

(some spoilers)

The film is a true crime mockumentary, (thus its not a real documentary, and only a fictional documentary) following FBI agents and police investigating a serial killer who has stalked and tortured its victims while recording himself in the act. This concept is the typical true crime fashion especially now since true crime has widely risen in popularity before the era of streaming services, podcasts, YouTube etc. for its time in the 2000's era, it would have been a interesting concept to watch in the theater.

The scenes of the killer filming his actions with some voyeuristic shots are what make them disturbing, intense, and gross, especially during the scene were the killer is filming a kid in the front yard. (not going into details just experience it for yourself) It also doesn't help that the camera has a VHS grain quality which adds atmosphere to the experience. The plot features a character tragically going through psychological torment by the killer and by the end of the film it reveals a bleak ending to this character. This was probably the most disturbing parts that effectively sticks even 4 years after watching the film.

With this being said, did it scare?

Yes

Did it emotional traumatize?

Yes, thanks John Erick

Was it a fun experience?

NO thanks, not watching it again.

  1. Greetings,
The last serial killer documentary I watched was "Don't F*ck with Cats", and I enjoyed the paranoia I experienced afterwards. Your blog's theme fit extremely well with the topic and it felt like a nice balance between a review and your own feelings towards the topic.

  2. I have always hated scary movies because I’m a crybaby, and I definitely don’t need more emotional trauma! Thank you for the warning. -Ashley C.
