Movie review, Skinamarink

 HI GUYS!

So far I have now watched Skinamarink. This film was a very strange and a different experience. (Some spoilers). I recommend watching the movie to get the experience.

Skinamarink is a horror/experimental film directed by Kyle Edward Ball, although I am not familiar with any of his movies, as far as this one goes its a pretty interesting one. "The film is hard to explain" or "I didn't get this film" and the most common, "this movie has an uncanny analogue horror aesthetic", is a sentiment among many who watched the film. Yes this film is hard to make any sense of and it does have an analogue horror vibe. The movie doesn't explain what is happening only the director knows and only his psyche, the plot is there but not in the "logical sense" only the "lyrical sense". The cinematography has a "super 8 film" grain quality to it as well as the audio. The shots are for the most part still, and there are characters in the movie, but they are hardly shown. The movie only presents us the audio and the still images, leaving the imagination left to the audience to fill in the details. Just like a book that never explicitly shows what it is but the audience fills in the gap using their imagination.

To best describe the experience, the film shows images of the interior of a house, closet doors moving, lamps turning on and off, doors opening and closing, stairs, rooms, windows appearing and then disappearing etc. however, they hardly show a character. The scenes are mostly audio and some kids walking. For instance, there is a scene where a kid appears to be sitting in a hallway but it never explains why. Then the shots are shown stairs, and the dialogue gives us clues to fill in the gaps, and the most effective thing it does is the lighting, the shadows in the hallway, make you second guess if there is something in the darkness or not, I think that's genius! it feels like there is something moving in the shadows or something is there but your not sure. As far as the ending is, its really creepy.

(no spoilers experience it).

Now lets talk about that scene...that scene lasts for at least 8 mins to 12 mins. Its probably an intense scare I experienced since The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Lake Mungo although if I were to rank these scares, this scare is up there. But this kind of scare will hit people differently depending on the person who is watching this film. The scene is effective because it takes around 40 mins to build up for what is to come.

(again, no spoilers experience it)

I would give it a 4 out 5 sparkling hearts. πŸ’– πŸ’– πŸ’– πŸ’– ❤

  1. I always enjoy watching found footage, I don't why. Maybe because of what we see the character sees than what other horror movie that just see everything. -- Kevin G.B.

  2. I watched this at AMC a few weeks ago and really enjoyed how creepy it was. It's cool to see something so experimental getting mainstream attention. - Mr. Merrell
